Chicken Coop Construction

Chickens have been an important part of our lives for many years now. When we bought the house, it was only about 3 weeks before we brought home a handful of baby chicks to raise. We built this home for them over the summer while they grew to outdoor-sized hens.

Our last coop was made of plywood and looked awful. We went for the cute factor this time. Using cedar shakes also meant no large materials to haul, a big advantage since we don't have a vehicle that can transport 4x8 sheets right now.

No pictures of your hens?
We had chickens for close to 10 years and loved it. We let them roam around our yard with only a couple of instances when one had gotten out (one followed one of our kids out the gate and another got caught up in a big gust of wind, LoL). The fresh eggs were great and found after the initial cost, the cost was comparable to store bought. Do you eat your hens as well, or just harvest the eggs?

It's ridiculous, but I don't have any good pictures of the girls right now! We don't eat ours, just harvest the eggs. We're only allowed 6 in our town so that seems the most cost effective approach.
